The Airbus Beluga (officially the A300-600ST Super Transporter) is one of the most distinctive and extraordinary aircraft in the sky. Based on the Airbus A300-600 widebody airliner, the Beluga features a massively enlarged upper fuselage section that gives it its characteristic whale-like appearance - hence its nickname "Beluga" after the white whale species.
First introduced in 1995, the Beluga was specifically designed to transport large aircraft components between Airbus production facilities across Europe. Its voluminous cargo hold can carry entire aircraft fuselage sections, wings, and other oversized components that would be impossible to transport by any other means. The cargo compartment measures 7.4 meters (24 feet) in diameter and 37.7 meters (124 feet) in length - larger than its own fuselage!
